What is an AI research interview?
An AI research interview is a qualitative research session conducted by an AI interviewer rather than a human moderator. The AI follows a structured study design, conducts a live adaptive conversation with each participant, probes vague or deflecting answers, tracks what it has and hasn't learned, and produces a full transcript and structured analysis when the session ends. It is not a survey with a conversational interface. It is a genuine qualitative research session.
How an AI research interview works
An AI research interview follows a defined study structure, but the conversation within that structure is adaptive. It responds to what the participant actually says rather than following a fixed script.
Before a study goes live, a researcher defines the topics to cover, what they need to learn at each topic, and how deeply the AI should probe. This study design is the foundation. Once a participant starts an interview, the AI uses that design as a map. The route through the conversation is shaped by the participant's responses.
If a participant gives a specific, detailed answer, the AI recognises that the topic is well covered and moves forward. If a participant gives a vague or deflecting answer, the AI probes rather than accepting it: asking for a specific example, naming the deflection, or reframing the question. If a participant raises something unexpected that's relevant to the study objectives, the AI can pursue that thread before returning to the planned structure.
What the AI is tracking during a session
Throughout the conversation, the AI maintains a live model of what it knows and doesn't know about each topic in the study. It is not a simple checklist. It is a continuous assessment of whether the responses received so far actually constitute evidence for the research objectives.
For each topic in the study, the AI is tracking:
- Whether the key questions have been meaningfully answered
- How confident it is in the coverage of that topic based on what the participant has said
- Whether the participant's answers have been specific enough to be useful, or vague enough to require more probing
- Whether anything said has implications for other topics in the study
When a topic is well covered, when the AI has received specific, substantive responses that address the research objectives, it moves forward. When it hasn't, it stays and probes. This is how the AI maintains both consistency across participants and depth within each session.
The difference between an AI interview and a survey
The distinction matters because many tools marketed as AI research are, in practice, branching surveys with a conversational interface. They ask fixed questions, accept whatever answer comes back, and move to the next question. The AI is the interface, not the research methodology.
A genuine AI research interview is different in three ways.
Adaptive probing. The AI responds to what the participant actually said, not just the fact that they said something. A short or vague answer triggers follow-up. A specific and interesting answer might warrant deeper exploration. The conversation is shaped by the participant's responses in real time.
Coverage tracking. The AI maintains a model of what it has and hasn't learned across the study, and calibrates its behaviour accordingly. If a topic is already well covered, the AI moves forward efficiently. If a topic has been skimmed, the AI returns to it.
Methodological discipline. A well-designed AI interviewer holds to the same standards as a skilled human moderator: open questions, no leading framing, no filler affirmations, one question at a time. The output is comparable to moderator-led research, not to survey data.
When AI interviews are most valuable
High-volume studies. Running 50 interviews with a human moderator takes weeks. Running 50 AI interviews takes as long as it takes participants to complete them, typically days. For studies where you need enough participants to reach saturation across a diverse sample, AI interviews remove the primary constraint.
Continuous research. Most teams run research in discrete projects: a study every quarter, or whenever a specific question becomes urgent. AI interviews make it possible to run research continuously, with a live study collecting sessions between major cycles. Teams that do this accumulate understanding faster and make better decisions with less lag.
Consistency across participants. Human moderators vary. Different interviewers ask questions differently, probe differently, and respond to deflection differently. Even the same moderator varies across sessions as fatigue sets in or earlier sessions start to colour how they hear later ones. AI interviews are consistent by design: every participant gets the same depth, the same probing standard, the same coverage.
Studies requiring geographic or time-zone coverage. An AI interviewer doesn't have office hours or a time zone. Participants in Singapore, London, and Sydney can complete interviews on their own schedule without any coordination overhead.
What AI interviews are not suited for
AI interviews are not the right tool for every research question.
They are less suited to highly exploratory research where the researcher genuinely doesn't know what they're looking for, where the goal is discovery with no predefined structure. In these situations, an experienced human moderator can follow unexpected threads more fluidly and make judgment calls about direction that are harder to encode in advance.
They are also less suited to research where the relationship between researcher and participant matters: longitudinal studies involving repeated sessions, sensitive topics requiring significant trust-building, or research communities where ongoing rapport is part of the methodology.
For the large majority of applied research, structured discovery, concept testing, experience evaluation, and continuous feedback loops, AI interviews are a genuine methodological option, not a compromise.
What this looks like in practice
A UX research lead at a B2B software company needs to understand why users aren't activating a newly launched reporting feature. She has 10 days before the next sprint planning session and needs findings she can act on.
She writes a brief in Fieldwork: the research question is what's stopping users from running their first report, and she needs to understand whether the barrier is awareness, confidence, or perceived value. Sofi generates a study structure with four topics. The researcher reviews it, tightens the resolution criteria on the second topic, and sets it live.
Fourteen participants complete interviews over three days. Frequently asked questions
Are AI research interviews as valid as moderator-led interviews?
For structured qualitative research with defined topics, clear objectives, and a semi-structured format, AI interviews produce findings that are methodologically comparable to moderator-led sessions, with the added benefit of greater consistency across participants. The validity question is answered by study design quality, not by whether a human or AI conducts the session.
Can participants tell they're talking to an AI?
Fieldwork is transparent about this. Sofi is described as an AI interviewer, not a human researcher. Most participants adapt to the conversational format quickly. Research on AI-conducted interviews suggests that transparency about AI involvement does not significantly affect response quality for most research topics.
What happens if a participant goes off topic?
The AI tracks whether responses are relevant to the study objectives and the current topic. Off-topic responses are noted but don't derail the session. The AI returns to the study structure while incorporating anything relevant from the tangent into its understanding of the participant.
How does an AI interview handle sensitive topics?
Study designs include defined areas the AI will not enter. Researchers set these before the study goes live. If a participant raises a topic that falls outside the study's scope or into a defined sensitive area, the AI acknowledges it and redirects without probing further.
What does the output of an AI research interview look like?
Each completed session produces a full transcript, an automated quality assessment, and a coverage map showing which topics were resolved, partially covered, or missed. Across a study, the platform aggregates themes and flags topics that were consistently underexplored across participants. Exports are available in structured formats for use in research repositories or analysis tools.
How is participant consent handled?
Every participant sees a consent prompt before the interview begins, with a link to the relevant privacy policy. Consent is logged per session, including timestamp, study, and locale, for audit purposes. Participants are identified by anonymous session IDs, not by name or email.
